Serie A: Atalanta squander a two-goal advantage in a draw against Verona, while Fiorentina is unable to secure a win against Girona.

Gianluca Scamacca was the hero for Atalanta as they celebrated his goal in their Serie A clash against Hellas Verona. However, the match ended in a disappointing 2-2 draw for the home side.

After their impressive victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Europa League, Atalanta were hoping to continue their winning streak. Scamacca opened the scoring with a stunning volley in the 13th minute, followed by Ederson’s tidy finish just five minutes later to give Atalanta a comfortable two-goal lead.

Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances in the first half, Atalanta’s performance dipped in the second half. Verona fought back with two quickfire goals of their own. Darko Lazovic scored from long range in the 56th minute, ending his goal drought since October 2023. Tijjani Noslin then equalized with a header four minutes later, connecting with Fabien Centonze’s cross.

Atalanta had opportunities to secure the win late in the game, but substitute Aleksei Miranchuk and Emil Holm failed to convert their chances. This draw means Atalanta have only won one of their last six Serie A matches, a concerning statistic for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

In another Serie A fixture, Fiorentina faced Genoa and the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Andrea Belotti thought he had given Fiorentina the lead in the 25th minute, but his goal was disallowed by VAR due to a narrow offside decision.

Genoa took the lead just before halftime from the penalty spot, with Albert Gudmundsson converting the spot-kick after Fabiano Parisi fouled Pietro Terracciano in the box. However, Fiorentina responded shortly after the break when Jonathan Ikone headed in Giacomo Bonaventura’s cross to level the score.

Late in the game, Genoa were awarded what seemed to be another penalty after Michael Kayode allegedly brought down Mateo Retegui at a corner. However, after consulting VAR and the pitchside monitor, referee Davide Di Marco overturned his decision.

Both matches provided plenty of drama and excitement, but ultimately ended in draws. Atalanta will be disappointed to have let their lead slip, while Fiorentina and Genoa shared the spoils in an evenly contested match.
