Paris-Saint Germain lost 1-2 to Olympique Lyonnais, securing Lyon’s spot in the Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona.
Lyon secured their place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final with a 2-1 victory over PSG in Paris, sealing a 5-3 aggregate win. Melchie Dumornay was the hero for Lyon, scoring a superb goal in the 81st minute to finish off PSG.
Lyon’s defensive performance was formidable throughout the match, keeping PSG at bay even when there was only one goal separating the sides. Selma Bacha gave Lyon an early lead in the second leg with a surprise strike at the near post from a short corner. However, PSG equalized just before halftime with their only shot on target, courtesy of Tabitha Chawinga.
The second half promised to be explosive, but Lyon’s class and experience proved to be the difference. Despite several near misses and impressive saves from PSG goalkeeper Constance Picaud, Dumornay delivered the decisive blow.
For PSG, it was yet another near miss against Lyon, who have consistently been their nemesis in both Ligue 1 and the Women’s Champions League. This story has become all too familiar for PSG, as Lyon defeated them 5-3 on aggregate at the same stage two years ago. Lyon went on to beat Barcelona 3-1 in the final that year, and PSG will be hoping for a similar outcome this time around.
Since FFC Frankfurt’s victory over PSG in the 2015 Women’s Champions League final, Lyon and Barcelona have dominated the competition, winning every edition since then. This trend will continue in the 2023-24 season, with Lyon and Barcelona set to face off in the final on May 25 in Bilbao.
