Julian Nagelsmann agrees to extend his contract with Germany until the 2026 World Cup.

Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team head coach, has agreed to a new contract that will see him lead the team until the 2026 World Cup. This comes amidst reported interest from Bayern Munich, his former club.

Nagelsmann took over as head coach in September 2023, replacing Hansi Flick on a short-term deal. Since taking charge, the 36-year-old has overseen an upturn in form for the national team, securing three victories in his six matches in charge. Notably, Germany achieved impressive wins over France and the Netherlands last month. These performances have solidified Nagelsmann’s position as a top managerial prospect.

Bayern Munich, who are in search of a new manager following Thomas Tuchel’s departure, were rumored to be interested in Nagelsmann. However, with his new contract, Nagelsmann will lead Germany as hosts in this summer’s European Championships and also guide them in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

In a statement, Nagelsmann expressed his excitement about the new contract, stating, “This is a decision of the heart. It is a great honor to be able to train the national team and work with the best players in the country. With successful, passionate performances, we have the chance to inspire an entire country.”

Nagelsmann’s managerial career has been marked by success. He led Hoffenheim to their first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification in 2017. After joining RB Leipzig in 2018, he guided the club to the Champions League semi-finals in 2020, narrowly losing to Paris Saint-Germain.

German FA president Bernd Neuendorf acknowledged the interest Nagelsmann had received from other European clubs and expressed his satisfaction with the coach’s decision to extend his stay with the national team. “It is a strong signal for the DFB and the national team that Julian Nagelsmann will remain national coach beyond the home European Championships,” Neuendorf said.

With Nagelsmann’s contract secured, Germany can now focus on their upcoming Euro 2024 campaign. They will face Scotland in their opener on June 14, followed by matches against Hungary and Switzerland in Group A. The team will be aiming for a successful performance under Nagelsmann’s guidance.
