Women’s Super League: Chelsea climbs to the top of the WSL, increasing the pressure on Arsenal’s Jonas Eidevall.
In a thrilling encounter at the Emirates Stadium, Chelsea secured a 2-1 victory over Arsenal, propelling The Blues to the summit of the Women’s Super League table and preserving their unbeaten start to the season.
The match got off to a sensational start for Chelsea, who found the net just four minutes in. Mayra Ramirez showcased her flair with an inventive overhead flick that left Arsenal’s defence scrambling. This early goal set the tone for Chelsea’s dominance in the first half.
Sandy Baltimore doubled Chelsea’s lead just over ten minutes later, heading home her first goal for the club from a perfectly placed cross by Lauren James. The visitors were in control, and it seemed they might run away with the game, leaving Arsenal struggling to find their rhythm.
However, Arsenal responded before the half-time whistle, with Caitlin Foord producing a moment of magic. The Australian international weaved her way past Lucy Bronze and into the Chelsea box, finishing off a stunning solo effort by striking the ball off the post from a tight angle. This goal injected life into the Gunners and set the stage for a tense second half.
Despite their efforts, Arsenal struggled to find an equaliser. Chelsea’s defence, marshalled by the impressive Hannah Hampton, held firm against the onslaught. Hampton was particularly crucial, parrying away a powerful volley from Stina Blackstenius, which was arguably Arsenal’s best chance of the afternoon.
While Chelsea have at times appeared to be adjusting to the tactics of new coach Sonia Bompastor, their perfect record of three wins from three matches suggests they are on the right path. Bronze was quick to praise Bompastor after the significant victory, stating, “It has been good. She has brought in a nice atmosphere to the team. She has introduced some new ideas, and while I don’t think we were at our best today, we are improving. The girls are listening to everything the staff have to say, and we want to keep learning from her.”
On the other hand, Arsenal are beginning to feel the heat early in the season, having managed just one win from their four outings thus far. Manager Jonas Eidevall is undoubtedly feeling the pressure, especially after this derby defeat, which has led to mounting criticism. With Emma Hayes having departed the league, many expected Arsenal to seize the opportunity to claim the title. They boast the highest and most consistent attendance in the WSL, yet their title aspirations may already be in jeopardy.
“It was a horrible start,” Eidevall admitted in the aftermath of the match. “We conceded from a corner, and then we didn’t defend the cross well enough for the second goal. But I have to say that I am super proud of the players for the grit and heart they showed for each other and the club, for sticking together in that tough moment.”
Eidevall continued, “We started to play better and better, found our way into the game, and began to build some real momentum. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough today. Of course, it is the start that kills us, but it is the mentality and bravery of the players that almost saves us.”
As the season progresses, both teams will be looking to build on this match, with Chelsea aiming to maintain their winning streak and Arsenal desperate to turn their fortunes around. The coming weeks will be crucial for both sides as they navigate the challenges of the Women’s Super League.
