Which team will England play against in the round of 16 in Euro 2024? What teams have made it to the next stage of the tournament?
Euro 2024 has kicked off with a bang, delivering thrilling matches and plenty of goals in a group stage filled with excitement. Teams like England, who had already secured their qualification, had to wait until the end of the group stage to find out their opponents for the last 16.
Now that all the group fixtures have concluded, we can reveal the teams that have qualified for the knockout stages and who England will face in the last 16 on their road to Berlin.
In Group A, tournament hosts Germany were the first team to secure their place in the knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Hungary. They will face Denmark, who finished second in Group C after drawing all three of their games, including against England. Switzerland also made it through after two draws and a win, and they will face Italy, the runners-up of Group B. Unfortunately, Hungary’s 1-0 win over Scotland was not enough to secure them a spot in the last 16.
Group B saw Spain emerge as winners after a 1-0 victory against Albania. They will face Georgia, who shocked Portugal with a 2-0 victory to secure their passage. Italy progressed as runners-up, while Croatia’s two points were not enough to advance. Albania exited the tournament following their defeat to Spain.
England topped Group C with an uninspiring goalless draw against Slovenia. They will now face Slovakia, who finished third in Group E. Denmark secured second place and will face hosts Germany. Slovenia’s draw with England was enough to see them through in third, and they will face Portugal.
In a plot twist, Austria topped Group D with a thrilling 3-2 win over the Netherlands. They will now face Turkey, who scored a 94th-minute winner in their final group game to finish second. France finished second in the group and will face Belgium in the last 16. The Netherlands managed to go through in third and will face Romania, who topped Group E.
Group E finished with all four teams on four points. Romania topped the group and will face the Netherlands. Belgium finished second and will face tournament favorites France. Slovakia’s draw with Romania was enough to see them through, and they will face England. Unfortunately, Ukraine’s draw with Belgium was not enough to progress, and they finished bottom of the group.
Portugal topped Group F despite a shock 2-0 loss to Georgia. They will face Slovenia in the knockout round. Turkey also reached the last 16 with a thrilling 94th-minute goal against the Czech Republic. They will face Austria, who have emerged as one of the form sides in the tournament. Georgia secured third place in their first-ever major tournament appearance and will face Spain, the only team to win all three group games.
As winners of Group C, England will face Slovakia in the last 16. While it may be a friendlier fixture than facing the Netherlands, England have yet to find their form in this tournament and are under intense scrutiny. They must be careful not to slip up against Slovakia. The good news for England and their fans is that they are now on the opposite side of the draw from Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal.
