Virgil van Dijk: The Dutch defender has agreed to a new two-year deal with Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract with Liverpool, the club announced on Thursday. The Dutch defender’s future had been a topic of speculation, with his previous deal set to expire at the end of the current season. However, he has now committed to staying at Anfield until 2027, quelling any concerns among the fanbase.

Van Dijk’s contract extension follows that of Mohamed Salah, who secured his new deal just last week. Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold, another key player whose contract is up this summer, has yet to agree on a renewal, with Real Madrid reportedly showing keen interest in his services.

The 33-year-old centre-back has put to rest any doubts regarding his future, choosing to continue his partnership with manager Arne Slot, who has guided Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table. The Reds currently sit 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with just six matches remaining.

Since joining Liverpool from Southampton for a record £75 million in January 2018, Van Dijk has established himself as one of the finest defenders in the world. His trophy cabinet boasts a Premier League title, a Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, two League Cups, and a Club World Cup. Should Liverpool secure the league title at the end of the 2024-25 season, it would see them equal Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles.

Reflecting on his contract renewal, Van Dijk expressed his joy: “It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing and I’m so happy.”

He added, “It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool. There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”
