Update on the England Euro 2024 team: Tom Heaton from Manchester United will be added to the squad as a training goalkeeper.
Manchester United’s third-choice goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, has been called up to join Gareth Southgate’s England squad in Germany as a training goalkeeper for the Euro 2024 campaign. Although he will not be part of the playing squad, Heaton will provide support to the three goalkeepers already selected – Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, and Dean Henderson.
The England squad will fly out to Germany on Monday in preparation for their opening game against Serbia on June 16. Heaton, a 38-year-old who won three England caps between 2016 and 2017, is excited to be part of the squad and is looking forward to passing on his experience to the team.
Heaton, who came through the Manchester United academy, was also part of the England squad at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League Finals. He expressed his honor at being asked to join the squad and is eager to contribute in any way he can.
Gareth Southgate is pleased to have Heaton on board and believes his experience will be invaluable to the team. Heaton’s inclusion will help alleviate the demands on the goalkeeping group, led by Martyn Margetson. Southgate also praised Manchester United for their support in making this happen.
In addition to his role with the England squad, Heaton is reportedly in talks with Manchester United about extending his current contract, which expires this summer.
