Switzerland defeated Italy 2-0, with goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas, advancing to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 as the defending champions are eliminated.
Switzerland’s Ruben Vargas was the hero of the night as he celebrated scoring his team’s second goal in their UEFA EURO 2024 round of 16 match against Italy at Olympiastadion in Berlin, Germany. The Swiss team put on a dominant display, comfortably defeating an uninspiring Italian side.
Italy’s coach, Luciano Spalletti, made six changes to his starting lineup following their fortunate draw against Croatia in the group stage. However, the lack of cohesion was evident as they struggled to match the settled Swiss team. The only change for Switzerland saw Ruben Vargas replace Silvan Widmer, a move that proved to be fruitful.
Throughout the first half, Switzerland controlled the game, keeping the ball in the Italian half. Gianluigia Donarumma, Italy’s goalkeeper, made a couple of saves to deny Breel Embolo and Fabian Rieder, preventing Switzerland from extending their lead. However, Remo Freuler managed to find the back of the net, giving Switzerland the lead going into halftime.
Italy was expected to come out with renewed determination and purpose after a stern halftime talk. However, they faltered right from the kick-off, giving away possession to Switzerland. Taking advantage of the situation, Switzerland swiftly moved down the field, and Vargas capitalized on the ample space in the box to double their lead. From that point onwards, the reigning champions struggled to find a way back into the game.
With this impressive victory, Switzerland secured their place in the quarter-finals of the tournament. Their dominant performance and clinical finishing proved too much for Italy to handle.
