Switzerland defeated Hungary 3-1 with Breel Embolo scoring on his emotional comeback to the national team.
Scotland’s hopes of a successful Euro 2024 campaign were dashed as they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Germany. Manager Steve Clarke expressed his frustration, stating that his team had let themselves down.
In Group A, Switzerland showcased their dominance in the first half, securing a 3-1 victory over Hungary. The match saw Kwadwo Duah, in only his second international appearance, open the scoring with a well-timed run and finish off Michel Aebischer’s through ball, leaving goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi helpless.
Switzerland continued to assert their authority and were rewarded just before half-time when Aebischer curled a beautiful shot into the bottom right-hand corner, extending their lead.
However, Hungary came out fighting in the second half and managed to pull one back. Captain Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a pinpoint cross, finding the head of Roland Varga, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.
Despite Hungary’s efforts, it was Switzerland who had the last laugh. Breel Embolo sealed the victory with a lifted finish over Gulacsi’s head in stoppage time, leaving the Hungarian goalkeeper with no chance.
The result leaves Switzerland in a strong position in Group A, while Hungary will need to regroup and bounce back in their next match.
