Scotland’s hopes of advancing in Euro 2024 were dashed as Barnabas Varga’s frightening collision led to a 1-0 victory for Hungary.
Scott McTominay, the Scottish midfielder, was left frustrated after receiving a yellow card from referee Facundo Tello during the UEFA EURO 2024 group stage match between Scotland and Hungary at Stuttgart Arena. The foul was committed on Marton Dardai of Hungary.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Scotland suffered yet another disappointment in a major tournament. Kevin Csoboth’s goal in the 100th minute propelled Hungary above Scotland into third place, keeping their Euro 2024 last 16 hopes alive.
Scotland, with hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history, came agonizingly close to equalizing in the dying moments of the game. Grant Hanley squandered a golden opportunity deep into stoppage time.
However, as Scotland pushed forward in search of a late winner from a corner, they were caught off guard on the counter-attack. Substitute Csoboth made amends for his earlier miss by calmly slotting the ball into the net, leaving the Scottish goalkeeper helpless.
With this defeat, Hungary leapfrogged Scotland into third place in Group A, accumulating three points. Now, Scotland must anxiously await the outcome of the remaining group stage matches to determine if they will qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Unfortunately, the game was marred by a serious injury to Barnabas Varga, who had to be stretchered off after a collision during a set-piece.
