In a significant development for Leicester City, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed as the club’s new manager. The Dutchman steps into the role at a challenging time, with the Foxes having secured just two victories from their opening twelve league matches. This disappointing start has left them precariously positioned just one point above the relegation zone.

Van Nistelrooy has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2027. He is set to be present for Leicester’s upcoming Premier League clash against Brentford this Saturday, although he will officially take over full managerial responsibilities from Sunday onwards.

The primary objective for the former Manchester United striker will be to preserve Leicester’s top-flight status. This is a crucial task, especially considering that the team achieved promotion to the Premier League last May by clinching the Championship title under the guidance of current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.

In an interview with LCFC.com, van Nistelrooy expressed his enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I’m proud, I’m excited. Everybody that I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic. They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the Club, the supporters, and, of course, the recent history of the Club is impressive. I’m excited to start and to get to know everyone and give everything I can for the Football Club.”

The 48-year-old boasts an illustrious playing career that spanned 19 years, during which he made his mark at prestigious clubs such as Real Madrid and Manchester United. After retiring in 2012, he began his coaching journey within the academy at PSV Eindhoven.

By 2014, van Nistelrooy had progressed to become an assistant to Netherlands manager Guus Hiddink during the World Cup. In 2021, he took charge of the Jong PSV side, which eventually led to his first senior management role with PSV. There, he achieved an impressive record, winning 33 of 51 matches over a year and lifting the KNVB Cup.

After resigning towards the end of the 2022/23 season, van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford in July to join Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff. Following the sacking of ten Hag, he briefly took on caretaker duties, leading the Red Devils to three wins in four matches, including a 3-0 victory against Leicester in his final game in charge.

Now, as he prepares to lead the Foxes, van Nistelrooy will make his managerial debut at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday when West Ham United come to town. The pressure is on, but with his wealth of experience, fans will be hoping he can steer Leicester back to calmer waters.
