Ruben Amorim adopts a bold stance in his speech at Old Trafford as Manchester United concludes the Premier League season with a victory over Aston Villa.
Ruben Amorim addressed the Old Trafford crowd following Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, delivering a stirring message that “good days are coming.”
The match, which marked the end of the Premier League season, saw goals from Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen secure a deserved three points for United, who dominated the game against a Villa side reduced to ten men after goalkeeper Emi Martinez received a red card.
Despite their control, United squandered numerous opportunities both before and after the dismissal, leaving fans with mixed feelings about the performance. The result meant that Aston Villa missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification, but for Amorim, it was an opportunity to reconnect with a fan base that has felt disenfranchised this season.
“First of all, I want to apologise for this season,” he began. “I am really disappointed with the team. Secondly, I want to say thank you. We are very grateful for your support during the season. I know it was very hard in many games.”
He went on to address the future, stating, “Now we have to make a choice. Do we stay stuck in the past? This season is in the past, it’s over. We fight each other, or we stick together and move forward.”
Reflecting on his early days in charge, Amorim recalled, “Six months ago, in my first three games in charge with two victories and one draw, I said to you, the storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you, the good days are coming.”
He concluded with a rallying cry, “If there is one club in the world that has proved in the past that they can overcome any situation or disaster, it is our club. It is Manchester United football club. Thank you very much – see you next season.”
Since taking over in November after Erik ten Hag’s departure, Amorim has overseen a challenging season, marked by protests from supporters against the club’s ownership and the exile of certain players. He will be hoping for a significant turnaround as United aim to improve on their disappointing 15th-placed finish.
In the wake of the Villa match, the club confirmed the departure of three players. Christian Eriksen, who announced his exit post-match, expressed his best wishes for the club and its fans, stating, “Incredible stadium and club, they will be back at the top at some point I’m sure.” Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans, both of whom played against Villa, will also be leaving the club.
