Ruben Amorim acknowledges that he cannot promise he will continue as the Sporting Lisbon manager next season, especially with the speculation linking him to Liverpool.
Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that he cannot guarantee his future at the club, amid reports linking him to a move to Liverpool. The Portuguese manager, who led Sporting to the league title last season, has emerged as a frontrunner for the Liverpool job following Xabi Alonso’s commitment to Bayer Leverkusen.
Speaking to reporters, Amorim said, “I cannot make any guarantees (that I will stay at Sporting next season). Sporting are dealing with their future and I can’t decide now because I gave my word, I can’t go back on that, so if I don’t win trophies, I’m going to leave Sporting.”
Amorim emphasized the importance of winning trophies and stated that the decision on his future will be made later. He assured his players that he will not go back on his word and expressed his focus on winning the next game.
The Sporting manager is reportedly being targeted by Liverpool, who are looking for a successor to Jurgen Klopp. Amorim is contracted at Sporting until 2026 and could be available to Liverpool for €15m (£12m).
Despite the speculation, Amorim’s full attention is on the upcoming game against Benfica. He stated, “I don’t want to be talking too much about my future. The focus is on the game. But I can say that I won’t argue or put any pressure on Sporting, I owe the club a lot and what will happen, will happen.”
Amorim expressed his happiness at Sporting and reiterated his commitment to the club. He concluded, “I’m very happy here and I just wanted to clarify that. The focus is on the game because we want to win titles.”
With Sporting currently sitting at the top of the league table, their clash against Benfica holds significant importance. Amorim’s future may be uncertain, but his immediate priority is securing victory in the upcoming match.
