Mohamed Salah’s return proves decisive in securing victory for Liverpool and strengthening their position at the top of the Premier League table.
Mohamed Salah put on a dazzling display upon his return to the pitch, leading Liverpool to a resounding 4-1 victory over Brentford and extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points.
The match saw the visitors take the lead in the 35th minute, with Darwin Nunez expertly lobbing the ball over Mark Flekken after a superb header from Diogo Jota.
In the 55th minute, Alexis Mac Allister doubled Liverpool’s advantage by slotting a low shot into the corner, courtesy of a pass from Salah, who had come on as a substitute in the first half. Salah then added to his impressive performance by scoring his 19th goal of the season, racing after Cody Gakpo’s flick-on and firing into the corner.
Although Ivan Toney managed to pull one back for Brentford with his fourth goal in five matches since returning from a betting ban, Gakpo sealed Liverpool’s victory with a clinical effort four minutes from time. It was a fantastic result for the league leaders, especially considering the challenging nature of the match on paper.
However, there was a downside for Jurgen Klopp as both Curtis Jones and Jota were forced to leave the field due to injuries in the first half, adding to Liverpool’s growing list of sidelined players ahead of their League Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday.
Despite the injuries, Liverpool’s triumph ensures that they will finish the weekend at the top of the table. However, their title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal still have the opportunity to close the gap when they play their matches later on Saturday.
Looking ahead, Liverpool will face Luton at Anfield on Wednesday night, while Brentford will visit Manchester City on Tuesday.
