Mats Hummels supports Borussia Dortmund’s chances for success in the UEFA Champions League following their victory against PSG.
Mats Hummels, Emre Can, and Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund celebrated their victory in front of the fans after defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg match. The defender, Hummels, scored a towering header in the second leg, securing a 1-0 victory on the night and a 2-0 victory on aggregate. This win has now secured their place in the final at Wembley, where they will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
Hummels expressed his confidence in Dortmund’s ability to win the Champions League this season. He stated, “Since the second match of the group stage, we’ve believed that we can prevail in every game – and I don’t see why we shouldn’t win at Wembley now.”
Dortmund has previously won the Champions League in 1997, defeating Juventus 3-1. However, they have only reached the quarter-finals twice since then, losing in the semi-finals to Real Madrid in 1998 and finishing as runners-up to Bayern Munich in 2013. Interestingly, the 2013 final was also held at Wembley, where Dortmund lost 2-1 despite İlkay Gündoğan’s goal.
Dortmund’s Champions League campaign this season started with an impressive group stage performance, earning 11 points from six games against AC Milan, Newcastle, and PSG. They suffered a 2-0 defeat in the away game against PSG in September but managed to draw the return fixture 1-1.
Hummels was delighted to gain revenge for those earlier results and was also thrilled to add to his goal tally for the campaign. He said, “I’ve scored far too few Champions League goals in my career, just five. Now is a good time to add to that number! We remained active today and were able to take so much pace out of the game and atmosphere out of the stadium. That was our recipe for success today.”
