Manchester United has contacted Sporting CP regarding the transfer of Victor Gyokeres, as Ruben Amorim considers bringing back his former striker.
In a thrilling turn of events, Manchester United have reportedly made an “initial approach” to Sporting CP for the highly sought-after striker Victor Gyokeres. According to Sky Sports News, intermediaries have been in contact regarding a potential deal that could see the prolific forward, who netted an impressive 54 goals in the 2024/25 campaign, return to the Premier League under the guidance of Ruben Amorim.
Gyokeres has established himself as one of Europe’s most lethal strikers since his move to the Portuguese club, boasting a remarkable record of 97 goals in just 102 matches. Amorim played a pivotal role in the striker’s development after he joined Sporting for a reported £20 million from Coventry City in 2023, before taking the reins at Old Trafford in November last year.
The report suggests that Gyokeres and Sporting have a “gentleman’s agreement” that could facilitate his departure should offers of £58 million or more materialise. Notably, he has a release clause in his contract set at £84 million, which could complicate matters for any interested parties.
United have wasted no time in kickstarting their summer transfer business following their disappointing lowest-ever Premier League finish last season. They have already secured the signing of highly-coveted Wolves forward Matheus Cunha in a deal believed to exceed £60 million.
Gyokeres has received widespread acclaim during his two-year stint at Sporting, highlighted by a stunning hat-trick that helped Amorim’s side to a 4-1 victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League last year. This match marked Amorim’s penultimate game in charge before his move to United.
In addition to his Champions League exploits, Gyokeres played a crucial role in securing the Primeira Liga title for Sporting, scoring 39 goals in 33 league matches during the 2024/25 season, alongside six goals in eight Champions League appearances, despite the team’s early exit from the tournament.
The 27-year-old’s rise to prominence is particularly noteworthy, coming just four years after his departure from Brighton & Hove Albion. The South Coast club sold him to Coventry City for a mere £1 million in the summer of 2021, following loan spells in the Championship. Gyokeres went on to score 43 goals in 116 games for Coventry, although his side fell short against Luton in the Championship play-off final before he made the move to Portugal.
