In a significant move for Manchester United, the club has confirmed the signing of forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazil international was widely anticipated to be Ruben Amorim’s first acquisition of the summer, and the deal has now been officially announced.

Cunha, who enjoyed a prolific season with Wolves, netting 17 goals and providing six assists across all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign, had attracted interest from several clubs. However, he has chosen to commit to the ongoing project at Old Trafford, a decision that has excited the United faithful.

The striker was spotted in Manchester over the weekend, where he completed his medical ahead of the transfer. United released a statement on their website, expressing their enthusiasm: “Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”

Amorim, who is keen to bolster his attacking options during his inaugural summer transfer window, has identified Cunha as a key addition. Last season, United struggled to find the back of the net, finishing with one of the lowest goal tallies in the Premier League, only surpassing Everton and relegated teams Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton.

Captain Bruno Fernandes led the scoring charts with 19 goals in all competitions, but among the club’s recognised centre-forwards, only Rasmus Hojlund managed to reach double figures. The lack of firepower was a significant concern for the club.

With United set to miss out on European football next season after a disappointing defeat to Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League final, Amorim has stated that this will provide him with more time on the training pitch to enhance the team’s domestic performance. Following a 15th-place finish, the Portuguese manager addressed the Old Trafford supporters, promising that “the good days are coming” while apologising for a tumultuous campaign.

As several players are expected to leave the club, Cunha will be the first new face to arrive. He joined Wolves from Atletico Madrid in 2023 for a fee around £34 million and has since made a significant impact with 42 goal contributions in the Premier League.

Despite interest from clubs like Arsenal and Aston Villa, Cunha will don the iconic red of Manchester United next season, marking the beginning of what fans hope will be a revitalised era at Old Trafford.
