Luis Enrique suggests there may be more player changes for Kylian Mbappe in the upcoming PSG matches.
Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has suggested that he may continue to substitute star player Kylian Mbappe early in matches. This decision caused quite a stir when Mbappe was taken off at half-time during PSG’s recent 0-0 draw with Monaco in Ligue 1.
Speaking ahead of PSG’s UEFA Champions League last 16 second-leg clash with Real Sociedad, Enrique was asked if he would make a similar call in San Sebastian and in future competitions. In response, he cryptically stated, “Could be yes, could be not, who knows..”
In February, Mbappe informed PSG of his intention to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, with a move to Real Madrid widely anticipated. This news came just a day after the striker scored in the first leg against Sociedad, helping his team secure a 2-0 victory.
Since then, Mbappe has been used as a substitute in the league win over Nantes, where he scored after coming off the bench, and has been taken off against Rennes and Monaco. In the latter match, he was even seen using his mobile phone in the tunnel after being substituted.
Enrique addressed Mbappe’s situation, stating, “Sooner or later, we will have to get used to playing without Kylian. It’s a decision that I made with the aim of doing the best for the team.”
PSG will arrive at the Anoeta Stadium on Tuesday with a two-goal advantage, thanks to goals from Mbappe and Bradley Barcola in the first leg. They are aiming to reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in three seasons, having been eliminated by Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the past two years.
Despite their lead, Enrique is not taking anything for granted and expects his team to be fully prepared for the match. He said, “What I expect from the team is for them to understand the importance of this match. Hopefully, we can approach it with the same mentality as our previous matches this season. I have great confidence in my team, but defeating Real Sociedad at their home won’t be easy.”
Mbappe has been PSG’s top scorer in the Champions League since joining the club from Monaco in 2017, with 38 goals to his name.
