Laia Aleixandri finds the back of the net while Khiara Keating shines as Manchester City eliminate Arsenal from the Women’s FA Cup to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
In a thrilling encounter at Meadow Park, Manchester City emerged victorious with a 1-0 win over Arsenal in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup. Laia Aleixandri was the hero of the day, scoring the only goal of the game.
The first half was a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. The goalkeepers were rarely tested, and the score remained level at the break.
However, it was Arsenal who started the second half with more intent. Victoria Pelova came close to breaking the deadlock with a curling effort, but it narrowly missed the target. City’s goalkeeper, Sabrina D’Angelo, had a moment of panic when she passed the ball straight to Chloe Kelly, but Arsenal failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Gunners continued to press forward, and Caitlin Foord forced a brilliant save from City’s goalkeeper, Khiara Keating, with a shot from a tight angle. Arsenal piled on the pressure with a series of corners, but Keating produced a stunning stop to deny a looping header.
As the game approached the 74th minute, it was City’s turn to threaten. Khadija Shaw’s header from a corner was clawed away by D’Angelo, and Leah Williamson had to clear another Shaw effort off the line.
Finally, the deadlock was broken when Aleixandri capitalized on a free-kick, slamming the ball home from close range after it ricocheted off Steph Catley’s thigh. Arsenal fought back desperately, but Keating stood tall, making a series of excellent saves to keep them at bay.
In a nervy moment, Keating fumbled the ball on the line, but she reacted quickly enough to snatch it before Arsenal could pounce. City held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s FA Cup.
It was a hard-fought victory for Manchester City, with Aleixandri’s goal proving to be the difference. The team will be delighted with their performance, especially Keating, who put in an incredible display between the sticks.
As for Arsenal, they will be disappointed to exit the competition, but they can take pride in their spirited fightback.
