Joao Cancelo, a defender for Manchester City, has been given a new opportunity in the Premier League due to interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Joao Cancelo, the Manchester City defender currently on loan at Barcelona, could be given a “Premier League lifeline”, according to reports.
Cancelo has impressed at full back for Barcelona, but the Spanish club may not be able to offer him a permanent deal due to financial constraints. The Sun states that Cancelo is set to be given an opportunity in the Premier League, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola falling out with him last year. Cancelo spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich, but they chose not to make the deal permanent.
Spanish outlet Sport suggests that Barcelona could make the deal permanent for £34m, but their financial issues may prevent this. The report also states that signing a right-back is not a priority for Barcelona, as they would prefer to use their resources to sign a left-footed right winger. Cancelo is keen to stay at Barcelona, but it is believed that he may need to cause a stir at Manchester City to lower their asking price. If a move to Barcelona does not materialize, Cancelo is expected to receive offers from both the Premier League and the Saudi league. His agent, Jorge Mendes, will attempt to negotiate another loan deal with an option to buy between Manchester City and Barcelona.
In other news, Chelsea are reportedly leading the race to sign Sporting defender Ousmane Diomande. The Ivory Coast international has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Newcastle. Chelsea are said to have made contact with Diomande’s representatives and are willing to pay around £51m up-front for the 20-year-old. Sporting are seeking an additional £17m in add-ons, which Chelsea are reportedly willing to pay. However, if Chelsea’s financial fair play concerns limit their spending this summer, Diomande could end up at Newcastle or Arsenal.
Finally, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has been added to Bayern Munich’s shortlist for their next manager. De Zerbi has received praise for his work with Brighton since taking charge in September 2022. While Xabi Alonso is Bayern’s top choice, he is also being pursued by Liverpool, leaving Bayern to explore alternative options. Sky Germany suggests that Bayern could make a move for De Zerbi, as their new board member for sport, Max Eberl, holds a high opinion of the Italian coach. De Zerbi is seen as one of the most sought-after coaches this summer, with a release clause of less than £10m. However, Bayern’s priority remains Alonso, and they may need to act quickly to secure De Zerbi’s services if Alonso rejects their offer.
