In the first leg of the quarter-final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, Lyon narrowly defeated Benfica 2-1 in a hard-fought match.
Lyon secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Benfica in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final clash. The French giants, who have an impressive record of winning the tournament eight times, were heavy favourites going into the match at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz. On the other hand, Benfica were making their debut in the knockout stages of the Women’s Champions League.
However, Lyon faced an uphill battle in the first half as they fell behind to a determined Benfica side. Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler was called into action early on, making a crucial save to deny Andrea Falcon’s shot, which struck the post. Despite their dominance, Lyon struggled to break through Benfica’s resolute defence.
Just before half-time, Benfica stunned Lyon by taking the lead. Andreia Faria seized the opportunity, dispossessing Griedge Mbock Bathy on the halfway line and calmly slotting the ball past Endler. Lyon were left with a mountain to climb in the second half.
However, Lyon came out with renewed determination after the break. They piled on the pressure, but Benfica goalkeeper Lena Pauels put in a heroic performance, denying Lyon on multiple occasions. It wasn’t until the 63rd minute that Lyon finally found the equaliser through Delphine Cascarino, who recently returned from an ACL injury.
The goal was a result of a well-executed team effort. Ellie Carpenter made a dazzling run down the right wing, evading several Benfica defenders before delivering a precise pass into the penalty box. Melchie Dumornay flicked the ball on to Cascarino, who unleashed a thunderous strike into the back of the net.
Lyon continued to wear down Benfica, and it seemed like substitute Vicki Becho had completed the comeback in the 76th minute. However, her goal was disallowed for offside. Lyon didn’t let the setback deter them, as they quickly struck again through Sara Dabritz. Dabritz rose above the Benfica defence to head in Lindsey Horan’s cross.
With a one-goal advantage, Lyon will now head into the second leg at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. The match, scheduled for Wednesday, March 27 at 5:45pm GMT, promises to be an enthralling encounter. Fans can catch all the action live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
