Goodison Park will serve as the new home for Everton Women in a groundbreaking decision – ‘A tribute to women’s football.’
Everton have made a landmark announcement confirming that Goodison Park will become the permanent home of Everton Women, marking a significant moment in the evolution of women’s football.
As the men’s first team prepares to leave Goodison after an impressive 133-year tenure at the end of the current season, they will transition to the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, set to open for the 2025/26 campaign. The men’s team will bid farewell to their historic ground in their next Premier League home game against Southampton, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the club highlighted that the iconic stadium “will remain a central part of Liverpool’s sporting and cultural identity” while also serving the purpose of “creating a team capable of challenging for honours – backed by high-quality facilities and a world-renowned home.”
The statement further explained that the decision follows an extensive review of the Goodison Legacy project by The Friedkin Group (TFG) since their takeover in December. Launched in 2020, the Goodison Legacy project aims to define the future of the historic ground.
“The Friedkin Group determined that football must remain at the heart of Everton’s community,” the statement read. The move is a response to the rapid growth of Everton Women, who require a larger and more suitable venue than Walton Hall Park. The first phase of the transition will involve stadium upgrades to enhance the matchday experience and ensure that adequate facilities are in place before the start of the season.
Megan Finnigan, captain of Everton Women, expressed her excitement about the move, calling it “a testament to where the women’s game is right now and, more importantly, where it is heading.” She added, “Goodison is a magical stadium with a deep heritage and close ties to the local community. Leading the team out for that first home match of next season will be nothing short of a career highlight – and the prospect of what Everton Women can become with such an iconic ground to call our home is hugely exciting.”
Everton’s chief executive officer, Angus Kinnear, also commented on the “statement of intent” surrounding the move, emphasizing the importance of continuing The Toffees’ legacy at the stadium. “We know how treasured Goodison is, not only to every Evertonian but to the game itself, and being able to keep such an iconic stadium at the heart of the legacy project is something that has been incredibly important to us,” he said.
Kinnear acknowledged the significant growth of the women’s game in recent years, expressing confidence that this growth will continue and accelerate. “We’re under no illusions; there are obstacles we need to overcome to make this a success both practically and economically, but we’re confident that we will overcome those challenges,” he stated. “We believe Everton Women can emulate that success and go even further, with one of the most revered grounds in the history of the game as their permanent home.”
