Gemma Bonner’s last-minute goal shattered Chelsea’s hopes of winning the title in a thrilling match, securing a victory for Liverpool in the Women’s Super League.

Gemma Bonner’s injury-time header secured a thrilling 4-3 victory for Liverpool against Chelsea, dealing a blow to Emma Hayes’ team’s hopes of clinching the Women’s Super League title.

It was Aggie Beever-Jones who opened the scoring for the away side, finding the back of the net with a well-guided header from a corner just nine minutes into the game.

Despite Liverpool creating more opportunities throughout the first half, they were unable to convert any chances into goals. However, Sophie Roman Haug restored parity for the Reds six minutes into the second half, heading home from a corner.

Liverpool then took the lead in the 65th minute through defender Bonner, as her header deflected off Erin Cuthbert and into the net, appearing to be an own goal.

Beever-Jones once again leveled the score with just nine minutes of normal time remaining, volleying home from close range. However, Liverpool quickly regained the lead a minute later when Leanne Kiernan calmly slotted home a through-ball.

In a frantic finale, Catarina Macario found the back of the net for Chelsea with a low first-time shot, evading a crowded Liverpool defense.

Just as the game seemed destined for a draw, Bonner rose to the occasion once more, heading in the winning goal deep into injury time, beating Hannah Hampton to the far corner.

A victory for Chelsea would have closed the gap to league leaders Manchester City to just three points, but instead, they now trail by six points with a game in hand. Liverpool, on the other hand, are in pursuit of fourth-placed Manchester United, with only goal difference separating the two teams.

Chelsea’s next fixture sees them take on Bristol City on Sunday, while Liverpool will host Manchester United.
