Gareth Southgate is hesitant to confirm Jack Grealish’s spot in the England squad, stating that there are many talented players to consider.
England manager Gareth Southgate has remained tight-lipped about Manchester City’s Jack Grealish’s place in the final Euro 2024 squad. Grealish is among the 11 forwards named in Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad, and with the need to trim down to 26 players, the forward’s position is uncertain.
Speaking ahead of England’s warm-up match against Bosnia & Herzegovina, Southgate refused to confirm Grealish’s place, stating, “I don’t think we’re defining that just yet.” He explained that the decision-making process is complex, with considerations for potential injuries and the need for cover in other positions.
Southgate acknowledged that Grealish hasn’t had as much playing time for Premier League champions Manchester City this season. However, he emphasized the unique qualities that Grealish brings to the team and praised his energy and training performance.
In terms of midfield selection, Southgate indicated that there may not be many cuts in that area, with only seven players in the squad, including uncapped players Curtis Jones and Adam Wharton. Southgate expressed excitement about exploring different options in midfield, particularly with players who don’t regularly play in that position or young players making their debut.
One notable inclusion in the midfield selection is Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has been transitioning from a right-back to a central midfielder. Southgate highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s improvement in receiving the ball in tight areas and praised his quality on the ball.
Southgate also confirmed that Grealish’s club teammate John Stones, as well as Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon, will miss the upcoming Bosnia game.
