Gareth Southgate has disclosed that Ben White chose not to make himself available for selection for the England team.
England manager Gareth Southgate has expressed his disappointment after Arsenal’s Ben White made himself unavailable for selection. White, who recently signed a new contract with his club, has not featured for the national team since withdrawing from the squad during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Despite his impressive performances for Arsenal, White has chosen not to represent his country.
Speaking about White’s decision, Southgate said, “Clearly on form, I can’t sit here and say he doesn’t deserve to be here.” The England manager hopes that White will eventually change his mind and make himself available for selection. Southgate revealed that he received a call from Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, informing him of White’s decision.
“It’s a great shame,” Southgate continued. “He’s a player I really like, a player we took to the Euros, a player I took to the World Cup. I spoke to him after Qatar because I was keen to pick him, but there was clearly some hesitation on his side. I don’t fully understand why, but I have to respect his decision.”
Southgate also addressed the rumors of a rift between White and assistant manager Steve Holland, stating that there is no issue between them. He emphasized that false reports about his coaching team are unacceptable and defended Holland’s role.
While Southgate is open to White returning to the squad if he has a change of heart, he believes it is unlikely to happen in time for the upcoming European Championship. The England manager explained that other players who have been consistently involved with the team will be given priority.
“Clearly, it would be difficult for him to come in for June now,” Southgate said. “We have players who have been part of the journey and have been playing regularly. We have to assess those who have been with us throughout the years and have shown commitment.”
In conclusion, Southgate expressed his disappointment at White’s decision but remains hopeful that the defender will reconsider in the future. The door is still open for White, but it seems unlikely that he will be available for the European Championship.
