Euro 2024 qualifiers: Rob Page confident Wales will bring their best performance against Poland
Wales’ Head Coach Rob Page received a standing ovation from the fans as the final whistle blew in the UEFA European Championship Qualifier Semi-Final match against Finland. After a dominant performance, Page expressed his confidence in facing Poland in the Euro 2024 play-off final this summer.
In front of their passionate supporters in Cardiff, Wales showcased their skills and secured a 4-1 victory over Finland. With two goals in each half, they took a step closer to Germany. David Brooks and Neco Williams found the back of the net to give Wales the lead, but Teemu Pukki’s goal for Finland just before half-time added some tension. However, Brennan Johnson and Daniel James sealed the win with their goals, with James celebrating his 50th international appearance.
Now, Wales will shift their focus to the play-off final against Poland, which will also take place in Cardiff. This match will determine if Wales can qualify for their third consecutive European Championship. Poland, who defeated Estonia 5-1, are eager to return to the tournament after their last appearance in Euro 2016.
Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Page praised his team’s performance and acknowledged the challenge that Poland will pose. He stated, “We know what we’ve got in the changing room, they’re a great group of lads and we did have a selection headache tonight. Poland will be a tough game and we respect what they’re all about. However, we know if we bring our A-game like we did against Croatia and tonight, the result will take care of itself. We’ve been there and done it, we know what we have to do, it doesn’t faze us. We’ve had a taste of major tournaments and we quite like it.”
Daniel James, the winger from Leeds United, expressed his delight with the result and his own contribution to the match. However, he emphasized that the job is only half done. He said, “It was brilliant, I think we got off to a brilliant start then Neco scored an unbelievable goal for the second. I think we were disappointed to go into half-time having conceded but we went out in the second half with the same spirit and scored early again. We only got better from there so we’re obviously delighted, but it’s only half-time. We’ve got a big game on Tuesday now to look forward to.”
James also highlighted the team’s collective effort and the depth of their goal-scoring abilities. He added, “To score four here, I can’t think of the last game we scored four here, we’ve got goals all over the pitch. I think everyone’s come into camp, whether they’re playing or not, fit and ready. We really gelled as a team today and we’ve got to take that into Tuesday.”
