Euro 2024: Kevin De Bruyne questions his future with Belgium following loss to France.
Unbelievable, they did well – Tedesco baffled how Lukaku and Doku failed to score.
Kevin De Bruyne, the Manchester City star, has admitted that he is contemplating his international future following Belgium’s defeat to France at the UEFA European Championship. De Bruyne has been a key player for The Red Devils, captaining the team in all four games at Euro 2024 and scoring in their 2-0 victory over Romania. With 28 goals for Belgium, De Bruyne has represented his country in six major international tournaments since his debut in 2010, accumulating over 100 appearances. However, the 32-year-old hinted that he may have played his last game.
Reflecting on the France defeat, De Bruyne stated, “It’s too early to answer. Let me process this loss. It’s been a very long season, I need to rest my body. I will make my decision after the summer.”
Belgium head coach Domenico Tedesco added, “He knows how important he is. He doesn’t need my opinion about it because he knows. Immediately after the game, it’s difficult to ask these kind of questions to Kevin.”
Belgium’s journey in the tournament took an unexpected turn as Romania surprisingly topped Group E, leaving Belgium to settle for second place after a defeat to Slovakia and a goalless draw against Ukraine. This meant that Tedesco’s side advanced into the tougher side of the draw, facing Germany, France, Portugal, and Spain.
Despite putting up a strong fight against France and holding on until the 85th minute, Belgium’s hopes were shattered by an unfortunate own goal, resulting in their elimination from yet another major tournament without securing any silverware. De Bruyne expressed his disappointment, saying, “It is a pity. We had a plan and we executed that plan pretty well. We knew that with France’s qualities they would have more of the ball, but I think we defended well as a team and didn’t concede many chances apart from a few long shots. Our plan was good until their goal came, with the deflection, there is not a lot we can say about that. It’s unfortunate, so we have to accept it.”
Tedesco, on the other hand, was left baffled by the failure of Romelu Lukaku and Jeremy Doku to find the back of the net. Despite their efforts, the Belgian forwards were unable to convert their chances, leaving Tedesco in disbelief. “Unbelievable, they did well,” he remarked. The coach acknowledged the importance of their contributions but expressed his frustration at their inability to score.
As the dust settles on Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign, the nation will eagerly await De Bruyne’s decision regarding his international future. With his experience and talent, his absence would undoubtedly be a significant loss for the team. However, only time will tell what lies ahead for the Belgian star.
