Chelsea are currently exploring other options in their search for a new striker. They have begun talks with Atletico Madrid regarding the potential signing of Samu Omorodion. The 20-year-old Nigerian forward had an impressive loan spell at Alaves last season, scoring nine goals in 35 appearances. While Omorodion is expected to come with a price tag of over £30m, he is still a more affordable option compared to Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, who is valued at £40m.
However, Chelsea have reservations about pursuing a deal for Duran due to concerns over his wage demands and attitude. The club is also showing interest in Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise and has undisclosed alternative options in attack. Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke is reportedly out of their price range, and their top target, Benjamin Sesko, will be staying at RB Leipzig.
Under the guidance of their new head coach, Enzo Maresca, Chelsea are eager to strengthen their striking options and not solely rely on Nicolas Jackson. While Jackson had a promising debut season, the club wants to avoid putting too much pressure on the Senegal international.
Meanwhile, Manchester United are in talks with Bologna for the transfer of Joshua Zirkzee and are preparing a bid. Zirkzee has a buy-out clause of £33.7m, and United are looking to outbid AC Milan for his signature as they aim to make significant changes to their forward line this summer. Arsenal has also expressed interest in Zirkzee, but United’s positive negotiations put them in a strong position to make an offer.
Leicester City is close to appointing Graham Potter as their new manager, replacing Enzo Maresca. Potter, who was last sacked by Chelsea in April 2023, has been the preferred choice for Leicester. Despite considering other options, the former Brighton boss is ready for a return to management and has been waiting for the right opportunity. However, financial concerns at Leicester may require them to sell players before the new season, and their transfer budget remains uncertain. They could potentially face a points deduction for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Ajax is keeping an eye on Wout Weghorst and is considering a move for the Dutch striker. Weghorst is not keen on playing for Burnley in the Championship next season. He scored the winning goal in the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 opener against Poland and has one year left on his contract with Burnley. Ajax, who had a disappointing season finishing fifth, are looking to reduce their wage bill and are monitoring Weghorst’s situation.
