Erik ten Hag commends Manchester United’s display despite losing to Manchester City.

Manchester United’s Dutch manager, Erik ten Hag, expressed his disappointment at the “small margins” that cost his team in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the derby.

Despite Marcus Rashford’s goal giving United hope, Phil Foden’s brace and Erling Haaland’s late strike shattered their dreams of victory.

Ten Hag acknowledged the efforts of his players, particularly Rashford and Jonny Evans, who were not at full fitness but still gave their all. He praised the team’s performance and togetherness, believing that on another day, they could have won the game. He highlighted Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho’s missed opportunities and credited City for their consistent play.

There was controversy surrounding City’s equalizer, as Rashford appeared to be fouled by Kyle Walker before the hosts scored on the counter-attack. Ten Hag expressed his frustration with the decision and also referenced an incident where City goalkeeper Ederson made a reckless challenge on Garnacho inside the penalty area.

This defeat marks the first time United have lost a top-flight game after leading at half-time since 2014. They now sit in sixth place in the Premier League table, 18 points behind City. Their hopes of securing a Champions League place have also taken a hit, with wins for Aston Villa and Spurs pushing them 11 points off the top four.

However, Ten Hag remains optimistic and believes they can close the gap. United will face Everton at Old Trafford in their next match, where they risk losing three successive Premier League matches for the first time since 2015.

Captain Bruno Fernandes acknowledged City’s quality but praised his team’s commitment and defensive efforts. He felt they played too deep at times but still had chances on the counter-attack.
