Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca discusses the decision to exclude ‘top’ player Ben Chilwell from the first team this season.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed his disappointment over the treatment of Ben Chilwell, admitting he feels a sense of “shame” regarding the situation. Despite the England international’s professionalism and hard work, he has found himself sidelined, featuring just once since Maresca took the reins at Stamford Bridge last summer.
Ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming clash with Bournemouth, which will be broadcast live on TNT Sports and discovery+, Maresca acknowledged the challenges faced by the 28-year-old full-back. “Players want to play more, so there are probably chances for them to leave,” he stated, before praising Chilwell’s attitude. “But Ben has been top. I have to say that, he has been top. Very professional, works hard. I feel shame because of that situation, but in terms of behaviour, he has been very good.”
When pressed on why Chilwell has not been a regular in the starting XI, Maresca was candid. “First of all, because it is my choice. I can see Malo Gusto, Reece James, or Marc Cucurella doing different kinds of jobs during the game,” he explained. While acknowledging Chilwell’s quality as a full-back, Maresca admitted he struggles to envision him adapting to the varied roles required in his tactical setup.
The Italian manager also touched upon the return of Reece James, stating he is “not a fan of full-backs going up and down,” hinting at a more nuanced approach to the position. This perspective reflects Maresca’s desire for a more strategic use of his players, particularly in defensive roles.
In addition, Maresca addressed speculation surrounding summer signing Renato Veiga, who has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund. The 21-year-old, who joined from FC Basel, has reportedly been unhappy with his playing time and has found himself deployed at left-back rather than his preferred centre-back position.
“I’m not aware that there is an agreement for Renato,” Maresca clarified. “Yesterday he was here working, and today he will be working, so he’s our player. We’ll see if something happens.” He went on to highlight Veiga’s adaptability, noting that his performances in various positions have even earned him a call-up to the national team.
“We bought Renato from Basel, and he arrived and played well in different positions, allowing him to join the national team for the first time in his life,” Maresca said. “Even if he was not playing in his position, probably him playing for the international team means he is doing well in the role he is currently in.”
Maresca concluded by expressing pride in the development of young players at Chelsea, particularly those who can excel in multiple positions and earn international recognition. As the Blues prepare for their next fixture, the manager will be hoping for a more clinical performance to secure vital points in their pursuit of success this season.
