Bukayo Saka’s clinical double propelled Arsenal to a resounding 5-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor, closing the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to just two points. The visiting side put on a dominant display, leaving relegation-threatened Burnley in tatters.
The tone for the match was set early on when Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard found the back of the net with a low finish, courtesy of a lovely pass from Gabriel Martinelli. Saka then converted a penalty in the 41st minute after Lorenz Assignon brought down Leandro Trossard. Odegaard turned provider once again as Saka buried a terrific third goal just two minutes into the second half.
Further superb finishes from Trossard in the 66th minute and Kai Havertz in the 78th minute completed the rout, leaving Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side crumbling under the intense pressure. This one-sided victory marked the first time in Arsenal’s history that they have started a calendar year with five consecutive league wins. It is also the third time this year alone that they have scored five goals or more in a match.
With this win, Arsenal now have 55 points from 25 games, trailing Liverpool by just two points after their 4-1 victory over Brentford earlier in the day. Manchester City, with 52 points from 23 fixtures, were set to face Chelsea in the late kick-off.
Burnley, on the other hand, remain second from bottom with just 13 points from 25 matches, sitting seven points away from safety.
In the match highlights, Odegaard opened the scoring for Arsenal in the 4th minute with a stunning volley from the edge of the box. The visiting fans were in high spirits as Saka converted a penalty in the 41st minute, extending Arsenal’s lead to 2-0. Saka continued his impressive performance, smashing the ball into the net in the 47th minute to make it 3-0. Trossard added insult to injury for Burnley in the 66th minute with a well-placed finish, while Havertz sealed the victory with a brilliant solo goal in the 78th minute.
Overall, it was a dominant display from Arsenal, leaving Burnley in disarray and securing an important victory in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
