Bruno Fernandes has stated that he turned down a significant offer in order to remain with Manchester United, after Ruben Amorim made a strong effort to persuade him otherwise.
Bruno Fernandes has confirmed that he was the target of a “big offer” from Al-Hilal, but has ultimately chosen to stay at Manchester United.
In recent weeks, speculation surrounding the Portuguese star has intensified, particularly following United’s disappointing UEFA Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The 1-0 loss marked a low point for The Red Devils, who finished the season without any silverware and in a historically poor 15th position in the Premier League.
A final-day victory over 10-man Aston Villa was their only league win against a non-relegated team since February, further highlighting the struggles faced by the club this season.
After the defeat to Athletic Bilbao in the final, Fernandes hinted that while he remains committed to United, the club might consider “cashing in” on him. This week, reports surfaced of a staggering £100 million bid from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, alongside a lucrative contract worth £700,000 per week for the midfielder.
On Tuesday evening, Fernandes addressed the situation during a pre-game press conference ahead of the UEFA Nations League semi-final against Germany. He stated, “There was that possibility. The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it. It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future.”
He continued, “As I have always said, I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so. I spoke to the coach, Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. If I had wanted to leave, they would have made it happen.”
Fernandes also shared insights from discussions with his family, saying, “I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. It would have been easy to move there, but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision.”
The United captain has had a standout season, leading the team in both goals and assists, with 19 of each across all competitions. As he approaches a significant milestone of 98 goals in England, Fernandes is gearing up for his seventh season with the club.
Having already secured the League Cup and FA Cup with United, as well as finishing as the Europa League’s top scorer twice, Fernandes remains focused on achieving further success with the club.
