Bruno Fernandes expresses his disappointment with his teammates, while Ruben Amorim reflects on “all the errors.”

In a disheartening display at St James’ Park, Manchester United succumbed to a 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United, leaving manager Ruben Amorim lamenting the numerous mistakes that plagued his side. Bruno Fernandes, the United captain, expressed his frustration with his team-mates, who failed to execute their game plan effectively.

The match began on a sour note for the Red Devils, with Joshua Zirkzee making a critical error that led to Newcastle’s opening goal. The Dutch forward miscontrolled a pass and attempted to find Fernandes with a careless ball, only for Sandro Tonali to capitalise, volleying home after a clever assist from Alexander Isak.

Things went from bad to worse for United as Diogo Dalot was caught napping, allowing Valentino Livramento to glide past him. The England full-back delivered a pinpoint cross that Jacob Murphy laid off for Harvey Barnes, who made no mistake in doubling the lead.

The third goal came courtesy of Noussair Mazraoui, who slipped and gifted possession to Barnes. The Newcastle winger surged through the United defence before slotting the ball past Altay Bayindir, who was making his first Premier League start in place of Andre Onana.

Bruno Guimaraes capped off the rout, intercepting a loose pass from Bayindir in midfield and finishing calmly to seal a comprehensive victory for the Magpies.

Despite the heavy defeat, there was a brief moment of hope for United when Alejandro Garnacho equalised in the first half, finishing off a swift counter-attack initiated by Dalot. However, this was merely a fleeting highlight in an otherwise dismal outing for Amorim’s men.

In the aftermath, Fernandes spoke candidly about the need for improvement, highlighting the individual errors that cost the team dearly. “I only get frustrated with them because I know how good they can be,” he stated. “We need to be on the front foot and give everything we have because we want to get to the semi-final.”

Amorim echoed his captain’s sentiments, acknowledging the mistakes that made it difficult to compete against a strong Newcastle side, even in the absence of manager Eddie Howe. “We did a lot of mistakes that made it harder to win a game,” he admitted. “It’s really hard to win against these top teams like Newcastle. Let’s focus on Thursday against Lyon.”

Since taking charge at Old Trafford, Amorim has faced criticism, with just six wins from 21 Premier League matches. However, he remains unfazed by the scrutiny. “I understand the criticism but I don’t care,” he remarked. “Losing games is the hardest part by far of this job.”

Looking ahead, Amorim stressed the importance of the upcoming Europa League clash against Lyon, urging his players to rise to the occasion. “We need to give something to our fans and to go to the next stage,” he concluded, as United aim to bounce back from this setback.
