Barcelona have secured the transfer of Spain national team player Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig on a six-year contract.
The highly anticipated contract extension for Spanish star Dani Olmo has finally been confirmed, much to the delight of Barcelona fans. The new deal will see Olmo remain at the club until 2030, with a staggering release clause of €500m.
Olmo’s return to Barcelona is a homecoming of sorts, as he left the club as a teenager to join Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb back in 2014. After impressing in Zagreb, he made the move to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in 2020 for a fee of £25m.
During his time at Leipzig, Olmo has showcased his talent in midfield, forming strong partnerships with the likes of Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Timo Werner. Last season, he combined with Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko and Dutch attacker Xavi Simons to help secure a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga and a spot in the UEFA Champions League for the 2024-25 season.
One of Olmo’s greatest strengths is his versatility, as he can play in various positions, including on the wing and in the No. 10 role. His performances in Spain’s Euro 2024 campaign were particularly impressive, as he shared the Golden Boot after scoring three goals and providing two assists in six games. Notably, he scored a crucial goal in the semi-final against France and played a pivotal role in Spain’s victories over Germany and France in the knockout stages.
Olmo’s impact was felt even in the final against England, where he made a crucial intervention by blocking John Stones’ header off the line in the dying minutes of the match.
This move to Barcelona comes after the club’s frustrations in their pursuit of Nico Williams. The Catalan club had shown interest in signing the talented winger from Athletic Bilbao, but Williams ultimately decided to remain at his boyhood club after signing a new three-year contract extension in December.
With the new season fast approaching, Barcelona, under the guidance of new manager Hansi Flick, will kick off their La Liga campaign against Valencia on Saturday, August 17. Fans will undoubtedly be excited to see Olmo back in the iconic Barcelona colors, ready to make his mark once again.
