Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed from his position as manager of Tottenham Hotspur, even after securing the UEFA Europa League title to break the club’s long-standing trophy drought.

In a surprising turn of events, Tottenham Hotspur have announced the sacking of head coach Ange Postecoglou. This decision comes less than a month after the Australian manager led Spurs to their first major trophy since 2008, a feat that had reignited hope among the club’s supporters.

The victory over Manchester United not only marked a significant achievement for Postecoglou but also fulfilled his promise of delivering silverware in his second season at a club. However, despite this triumph, the 59-year-old was unable to secure his position for a third season, with Spurs finishing a disappointing 17th in the Premier League, just one place above the relegation zone.

Tottenham’s points total of 38 this season was their lowest in Premier League history, surpassing the previous record low of 44 set during the 1997/98 campaign. The club’s aspirations for domestic glory were dashed in February, as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, followed by a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

The league campaign was marred by several low points, including a shocking 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester City, which ended the visitors’ seven-match losing streak in the league. Injury woes also plagued Spurs, with key players such as Guglielmo Vicario, Dominic Solanke, Micky van de Ven, and Destiny Udogie spending significant time on the sidelines.

Tensions between Postecoglou and the Spurs fanbase reached a boiling point during a defeat to Chelsea in March. However, the Europa League victory seemed to mend some of those rifts, as the manager joined his players in an open-top bus parade through north London to celebrate the achievement.

Yet, the allure of European success was not enough to convince the club’s owners to retain him for another season. As the search for a new manager begins, Brentford’s Thomas Frank has emerged as a potential candidate. Frank has been instrumental in guiding The Bees from the Championship to the Premier League since taking over in 2018, and his exciting attacking style has seen them finish 10th in the top tier this season.

Despite Brentford’s successful campaign, the prospect of Champions League football could tempt Frank to make the switch to Tottenham. The club is also reportedly interested in Marco Silva, who led Fulham to an 11th-place finish and an FA Cup quarter-final this season. However, securing Silva may prove challenging, as Juventus are also said to be eyeing the Portuguese manager, who has indicated his intention to remain at Craven Cottage after turning down an offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
