Xabi Alonso expresses his contentment at Bayer Leverkusen, but admits to being taken aback by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s choice.
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has dismissed speculation linking him to the vacant Liverpool position following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the season. Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, has been praised for his team’s performances as they currently sit at the top of the Bundesliga table.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Leverkusen’s derby with Borussia Monchengladbach, Alonso downplayed any rumors about his future. He expressed his admiration for Klopp and the incredible achievements he has made at Liverpool, but emphasized that his focus is solely on his current club.
Alonso admitted that he was surprised by Klopp’s decision, but reiterated his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen. He stated, “I have great motivation, I’m very happy. With the club and with the team. My focus is not on May, but on Gladbach tomorrow. But I was surprised by the news from Liverpool.”
When asked directly if he could rule out coaching Liverpool in the summer, Alonso did not provide a definitive answer. He simply stated, “Right now I’m here – for sure.” This response leaves the door open for speculation, but Alonso’s immediate priority remains with Leverkusen.
This is not the first time Alonso has been linked to a former club this season. Spanish media outlets had previously suggested that he could take over at Real Madrid in the summer. However, those rumors were put to rest when Carlo Ancelotti signed a new contract with the Spanish giants.
As the speculation surrounding Liverpool’s next manager continues to grow, Alonso remains focused on his current role at Bayer Leverkusen. Only time will tell if he will be tempted to return to his former club, but for now, his attention is firmly on leading his team to success in the Bundesliga.
