West Ham Outshine Arsenal 3-1, Advance to Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals
Jarrod Bowen of West Ham United celebrated with his teammate Said Benrahma after scoring their third goal in a thrilling Carabao Cup Fourth Round match against Arsenal at the London Stadium on November 1, 2023. The victory secured West Ham’s spot in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
It was a difficult return to the London Stadium for Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who had previously captained West Ham to UEFA Europa Conference League glory before his £105m move to the Gunners in the summer. Rice came on as a substitute in the second half but was unable to inspire a comeback for his new team on a disappointing night for the visitors.
In the first half, David Moyes’s men failed to register a single shot on goal. However, they managed to take the lead thanks to Ben White’s own goal from a corner taken by Bowen. Despite Arsenal’s dominance and attempts to create chances, they struggled to make a breakthrough.
The second half saw a much more determined West Ham side. Bowen forced Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into making an excellent save, and Mohammed Kudus showcased his skill with two impressive touches to double the home team’s lead on the 50th minute.
Bowen then extended West Ham’s lead with a deflected 20-yard shot on the hour mark, effectively sealing the victory for the Hammers. Arsenal managed to score a consolation goal through substitute Martin Odegaard deep into stoppage time, but it was too little, too late.
Mikel Arteta will be hoping for a significant improvement from his team ahead of their upcoming Premier League match against Newcastle on Saturday. Meanwhile, West Ham will be traveling to face Brentford in their next fixture.
