Victor Osimhen, the talented player from Napoli, affirms that his destiny has been determined despite the speculation of a potential move to the Premier League.
Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian striker currently playing for Napoli, has addressed the ongoing rumors linking him to a move to the Premier League. While he acknowledged the speculation, Osimhen remained tight-lipped about his decision and refused to disclose his next move.
Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille for a hefty fee of €70 million in 2020, extended his contract with the Italian club for an additional two years in November last year. However, his recent comments suggest that he may not see out the entirety of his contract.
Initially, Liverpool were considered the frontrunners to secure Osimhen’s signature during the 2023-24 season. However, it appears that Arsenal and Chelsea have now emerged as strong contenders in the race for the talented striker. Osimhen, however, has not revealed his preferred destination and has not even confirmed his departure from Naples.
Speaking about the Premier League rumors, Osimhen stated, “The rumor is going around about me being linked with the Premier League. Of course, when you’re one of the hottest strikers in the world, you expect this type of thing. It’s one of the biggest and best leagues in the world.”
Despite the speculation, Osimhen emphasized his commitment to Napoli, highlighting that he recently signed a new contract and is enjoying his time with the team. He added, “At the end of the season, I’ve already made up my mind. I already know what I want to do in my career. Since I’ve started, I’ve been the one making my own decisions on everything, and it’s working out well for me. I already know the next step I want to take, so for now, I just want to finish the season strong.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea, under the ownership of Todd Boehly, have been extravagant spenders in the transfer market, shelling out over a billion pounds. However, their current position in the Premier League is far from impressive, sitting ninth behind teams like Brighton, West Ham, and Aston Villa. They are also 12 points adrift of Aston Villa and the coveted Champions League qualification.
As for Napoli, their Serie A title defense has been lackluster, with the team currently occupying the ninth spot and trailing league leaders Internazionale by 21 points. Osimhen, who was instrumental in Napoli’s title-winning campaign last season with 26 goals, has struggled to replicate that form this season due to a hamstring injury, managing only seven goals so far.
Despite his relatively quieter season, Osimhen’s transfer value remains high, and Napoli is expected to demand a significant fee for his departure. In the meantime, Osimhen is currently on duty with the Nigerian national team in the Africa Cup of Nations, where they have qualified for the last 16 as Group A runners-up. Osimhen scored in their tournament opener against Equatorial Guinea but has been unable to add to his tally since then.
