Uli Hoeness claims that Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Real Madrid are all vying to hire the Bayer Leverkusen manager.
Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany – March 17: Xabi Alonso, the head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, was seen celebrating after his team’s victory in the Bundesliga match against Sport-Club Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion on March 17, 2024, in Freiburg.
Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has revealed that Liverpool and Real Madrid are also vying for Alonso’s signature.
Alonso’s Leverkusen side has been exceptional this season, currently sitting eight points clear of Bayern in the Bundesliga table. They are on the verge of ending Bayern’s 11-year dominance of the league. Moreover, Leverkusen remains unbeaten in all competitions, including the UEFA Europa League and DFB-Pokal.
As the 42-year-old manager closes in on delivering Leverkusen their first Bundesliga title, three of his former clubs are eyeing a move for him ahead of the 2024/25 season. Hoeness stated, “Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen, and FC Bayern are working on it.” He further praised Alonso’s coaching abilities, saying, “He’s proven that he can be a coach for the big time.”
Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro expressed confidence in Alonso’s commitment to the club, stating, “Xabi Alonso has a contract until 2026 and there is no reason to doubt that he will stay here.” However, in football, anything can happen, and both Bayern and Liverpool will be without a manager in the summer, with Thomas Tuchel and Jurgen Klopp leaving their respective clubs at the end of the season.
While Carlo Ancelotti recently extended his deal with Real Madrid until 2026, Alonso’s current contract with Leverkusen also expires at the same time. Liverpool, currently second in the Premier League table, are in pursuit of their second title, trailing leaders Arsenal on goal difference. Bayern is still chasing Leverkusen in Germany, while Madrid holds an eight-point lead over Barcelona in La Liga.
All three clubs are still competing in European competitions, with Bayern and Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and Leverkusen potentially facing Liverpool in the Europa League final. Alonso has a strong connection with Liverpool, having represented the club for five years from 2004 to 2009 before moving to Madrid for another five-year spell. He then joined Bayern in 2014, where he retired three years later.
