Toni Kroos has decided to end his international retirement and join the Germany national team for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
Toni Kroos, the esteemed Real Madrid midfielder, has announced his return to the German national team ahead of Euro 2024. The 34-year-old had previously retired from international duty in July 2021, having amassed an impressive 106 caps and played a pivotal role in Germany’s triumph at the 2014 World Cup.
In an Instagram post, Kroos stated, “Guys, short and painless: I will play for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was asked by the national coach, I’m up for it and I’m sure that a lot more is possible with the team at the European Championship than most people believe!”
Kroos’ decision to come out of retirement comes after his performances were criticized during Euro 2020, particularly in Germany’s 2-0 defeat to eventual runners-up England in the round of 16. Since his departure, Die Mannschaft have struggled, failing to progress beyond the group stage at the 2022 World Cup.
Unfortunately, Germany’s preparations for this summer’s tournament have not gone smoothly either. They have failed to secure a victory in their last three matches, with their most recent outing resulting in a 2-0 loss to Austria. However, Kroos’ return will undoubtedly be a boost for manager Julian Nagelsmann as they gear up to host the European Championship.
Kroos, who boasts an impressive record with five UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga triumphs, has been in exceptional form for Real Madrid this season. With seven assists and one goal in 24 appearances, he has played a crucial role in his team’s position at the top of the Spanish league.
It is expected that Kroos will be included in Nagelsmann’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against France on March 23 and the Netherlands three days later. Germany will commence their Euro 2024 campaign with a match against Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Friday, June 14, followed by group stage fixtures against Hungary and Switzerland.
