Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip will be leaving Liverpool when their contracts expire, as they follow Jurgen Klopp out the door.
Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip are both set to bid farewell to Liverpool this summer upon the expiration of their contracts, which was announced on Friday.
Thiago, who joined from Bayern Munich in 2020, is viewed by many as one of the finest midfielders in Europe. However, his time at Anfield has been marred by fitness and injury issues, especially in the last 12 months. He has played just one Premier League game this season and his last start for the club came 14 months ago. Despite this, Thiago has made 98 appearances overall and is believed to be one of the club’s highest earners.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke highly of Thiago, praising his technical abilities and describing him as an artist of the game. Klopp also acknowledged the frustration of injuries but emphasized the incredible level at which Thiago played when available. He wished Thiago well in his future endeavors and expressed his willingness to watch him play wherever he goes next.
In addition to his contributions on the pitch, Thiago opened a play area for young children in Toxteth last year through The Alcantara Family Foundation and the LFC Foundation, showcasing his commitment to the community.
Joel Matip, a German-born defender, will also be leaving Liverpool after an eight-season spell. Matip was one of Klopp’s first signings and played a crucial role in the team’s success, winning the Premier League and Champions League. Known for his dribbling abilities, Matip made 201 appearances, scored 11 goals, and picked up seven winner’s medals during his time at the club.
Klopp highlighted Matip’s assist for Divock Origi in the UEFA Champions League final against Tottenham in 2019 as one of his finest moments. He praised Matip’s defensive efforts and the impact he had on the team, leading to their victory in the coveted tournament.
As both Thiago and Matip prepare to depart, Klopp and Liverpool fans wish them the best for the future and express gratitude for their contributions to the club.
