The Ivory Coast began their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau at Stade Alassane Ouattara.

Ivory Coast’s midfielder #6 Seko Fofana (C) celebrated scoring his team’s first goal during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2024 group A football match against Guinea-Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium in Ebimpe, Abidjan. The hosts, Ivory Coast, kicked off the Africa Cup of Nations with a comfortable victory over Guinea-Bissau.

Although they didn’t always manage to captivate the home fans following the opening ceremony, the Ivorians secured the win with relative ease. They wasted no time in taking the lead, as Seko Fofana showcased his skill by creating space for himself on the edge of the penalty area and unleashing an unstoppable shot, just four minutes into the game.

Fofana came close to scoring a second goal before half time, thanks to a perfect pull-back from Franck Kessie. Finding himself in space 15 yards out, Fofana’s effort was only denied by a brilliant save from Guinea-Bissau’s goalkeeper, Ouparine Djoco, as the ball was tipped onto the bar.

The second goal for Ivory Coast arrived 13 minutes into the second half, courtesy of Jean-Philippe Krasso. He expertly controlled Jonathan Bamba’s cross and guided the ball into the net.

While it may not have been a performance that will intimidate their upcoming group opponents, it was a satisfactory start for the home nation.
