The Euro 2025 qualifier match at Wembley ended in a 1-1 draw between England and Sweden, with Alessia Russo scoring for England and Fridolina Rolfo equalizing for Sweden.
The England players were left feeling deflated and disappointed after conceding their first goal of the match against Sweden in the UEFA EURO 2025 Women’s Qualifiers. The goal, scored by Fridolina Rolfo, ultimately resulted in a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium.
England began their Euro 2025 qualifying campaign with a lacklustre performance against a strong Swedish side. Alessia Russo managed to give the hosts the lead in the 24th minute with a well-executed header. However, their advantage was short-lived as Rolfo equalized for Sweden with a header of her own in the 64th minute.
Speaking to ITV after the match, Russo acknowledged the strength of the Swedish team and the tough nature of their qualifying group. She expressed her disappointment at not securing all three points but remained optimistic about the team’s abilities. Russo emphasized the need to reflect, learn, and prepare for their next match on Tuesday.
Russo’s goal came after a challenging start to the match, as she had to receive medical treatment for an ankle problem following a late challenge in the sixth minute. However, she showed resilience and determination by returning to the pitch and scoring her first goal at Wembley. The Arsenal striker capitalized on a cross from Lauren James, producing a clinical header from close range in a half that saw few chances.
As the match progressed, Sweden grew in confidence and managed to level the score through Rolfo after the hour-mark. The Barcelona forward met a cross from substitute Rosa Kafaji and headed the ball into the back of the net. Sweden had a golden opportunity to take the lead shortly after when Stina Blackstenius found herself in a one-on-one situation against England’s goalkeeper Mary Earps. However, her left-footed strike narrowly missed the target, rolling just past the post.
England responded to the Swedish threat with heavy pressure, and Lauren Hemp came close to securing a victory for the hosts in the 87th minute. Unfortunately, her shot was cleared off the line by Sweden’s central defender Magdalena Eriksson.
The Lionesses will now turn their attention to their next Euro 2025 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, which will take place in Dublin on Tuesday. They will be looking to bounce back from their draw against Sweden and secure a crucial victory in their qualifying campaign.
