A good night for us – Southgate reacts to England’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina

In a thrilling match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, England emerged victorious, leaving manager Gareth Southgate pleased with the team’s performance. The win came as Southgate announced his final squad for Euro 2024, which saw some notable omissions.

Initially, Southgate had selected a 33-player training group, but that number has now been reduced to 26 ahead of the final submission deadline. Among those left out were Jack Grealish, James Maddison, and Harry Maguire.

Maddison and Curtis Jones were the first to be omitted from the squad, with Maddison expressing his devastation on social media. Maguire’s fitness had been a concern after his calf injury at Manchester United, and he too expressed his disappointment at being left out.

On a positive note, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton secured an unexpected spot in the squad, thanks to his impressive performances towards the end of the season. Wharton will be joined by his Crystal Palace teammates Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, and Eberechi Eze.

West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen managed to retain his place in the squad, despite fierce competition in the attacking group. The squad also includes Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer.

There was much speculation about whether Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins would be chosen, but Southgate decided to keep both strikers in the squad. This decision gives England more options in the attacking department.

Looking ahead, England will face Iceland in a friendly on June 7 before kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16. They will then have group stage matches against Denmark and Slovenia on June 20 and June 25, respectively.
