Steve Cooper has been named as the new manager of Leicester City, taking over from Enzo Maresca at the Premier League club.
Steve Cooper has been appointed as the new manager of Leicester City on a three-year deal. This is his first job since being sacked by Nottingham Forest in December 2023. Cooper takes over from Enzo Maresca at the King Power Stadium, after the Italian moved to Chelsea.
Leicester City Football Club confirmed the appointment, stating that Cooper is their new first team manager for the upcoming 2024/25 Premier League season. The 44-year-old coach has signed a three-year contract and joins the club as they prepare for their return to the top-flight after being promoted from the Sky Bet Championship last season.
Cooper brings Premier League experience to the table, having successfully guided Nottingham Forest to the top flight and established them there between 2021 and 2023. He has earned a strong reputation in the game for his coaching and leadership qualities.
In his own words, Cooper expressed his excitement and pride at being appointed as Leicester City’s First Team Manager. He acknowledged the club’s rich history and passionate supporters and is eager to work with the talented squad. He is ready to take on the challenge of achieving their shared ambitions in the Premier League.
Cooper’s achievements at Forest were highly praised. He took over when the club was at the bottom of the Championship in September 2021. Just eight months later, he led them to victory in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, securing their place in the Premier League for the first time in 23 years. Although he managed to keep them up during their first season back in the top flight, he was ultimately sacked after a poor run of form.
Now, Cooper will be leading a Leicester side that won the Championship title last season, ensuring an immediate return to the Premier League. He will have the likes of Jamie Vardy at his disposal, as the talismanic striker has agreed to a new one-year deal. However, the team has seen the departure of senior figures such as Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho this summer.
Leicester will kick off their Premier League comeback with a home match against Tottenham in their season opener. They will then face Fulham and Aston Villa in the early stages of the new campaign.
