Stefano Pioli leaves AC Milan after spending five years at San Siro due to a challenging Serie A season.
AC Milan have announced that manager Stefano Pioli will be leaving the club after a five-year tenure at the San Siro. The decision comes in the wake of a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Torino in Serie A over the weekend. This loss adds to Milan’s recent poor form, with just one win in their last eight games across all competitions, suffering four defeats in the process.
In a statement released by the club, it was stated that Pioli will depart at the end of the current season. The 58-year-old took charge of the first-team in October 2019 and has been instrumental in leading the team to success during his time at the helm. AC Milan expressed their gratitude to Pioli and his staff for their contributions over the past five years, which included securing a memorable league title and re-establishing the club’s presence in top European competitions.
Pioli himself expressed his appreciation to AC Milan for the opportunity to be a part of the club’s history. He thanked the ownership, management, team, staff, and everyone associated with Milanello and Casa Milan for their support and commitment. Pioli also extended his gratitude to the passionate fans who have supported AC Milan throughout the years.
Despite Pioli’s departure, AC Milan will finish in second place in Serie A regardless of the outcome of their final game against Salernitana, who have already been relegated. Pioli, a former player for Juventus and Fiorentina, took charge of Milan during a challenging period when the club had failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for five consecutive seasons. Under his guidance, Milan finished sixth in the disrupted 2019/20 season, followed by a second-place finish the following year, and ultimately clinched the Scudetto in the 2021/22 campaign.
However, the team has been unable to replicate that success in the past two seasons, leading to the decision to part ways with Pioli.
