Son Heung-min, the captain of Tottenham, aims to achieve the ‘dream’ of winning the UEFA Europa League title.
Son Heung-min: Spurs’ Trophy Drought Must End This Season
Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, Son Heung-min, has candidly acknowledged the club’s ongoing trophy drought, asserting that there is “no hiding” from the reality of their situation. As Spurs gear up for their UEFA Europa League opener against Qarabag, the South Korean forward has made it clear that the squad is determined to lift silverware this season.
Since their triumph over Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, Spurs have been without major honours, a fact that weighs heavily on the players. In an exclusive interview with TNT Sports, Son expressed the collective ambition within the squad to finally end this long wait. “There’s no hiding that we’re missing something that everybody has been working towards for many years,” Son stated. “We don’t want to talk too early about winning the competition, but that’s what we’re aiming for and we shouldn’t hide from it.”
He emphasised the importance of responsibility among the players, acknowledging the fierce competition they will face. “Everybody should take a huge responsibility because it’s not easy and a lot of teams want to win this competition,” he added.
With a talented squad and a capable coach at the helm, Son believes Spurs have a significant opportunity to achieve something remarkable. “We have great players and a great coach, so we have a massive chance to achieve something special,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough journey, but an enjoyable one, and it would be a dream to lift this trophy at the end of the season.”
Reflecting on his past encounters with Qarabag, Son recalled fond memories of scoring his first goals for Spurs against the Azerbaijani side nine years ago in the Europa League, where Tottenham secured a 3-1 victory. “I remember the first one was from a corner where Andros Townsend crossed the ball, and I got a nice tap-in because the cross was unbelievable,” he reminisced. “The second one was a combination with my brother – Dele Alli. I miss that feeling with him; it was such a joy. In the second half, I missed a big chance, so I should’ve scored a hat-trick, but I’m still happy about that and to get a massive win.”
Son also reflected on his early days at Spurs, recalling his Premier League debut away at Sunderland, where he felt he did not perform to his potential. “When you join a new club, you want to make an impact as soon as possible,” he said. “Thankfully I did. I was very happy to do it in the Europa League and on my home debut.”
Now, as the 32-year-old leads the team following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich, he expressed his pride in captaining both club and country. “It’s a huge honour, as has been being captain of the national team for a couple of years,” he explained.
“When I started as a professional, I never expected I would be captain of a club or international side, but when it comes, it’s a huge honour. It takes a lot of responsibility. You have to do everything right because we have such a young group, and everybody is looking up to the captain to do all the right things. It takes a lot of responsibility, but I love to do that, and I love the pressure.”
As Spurs embark on their Europa League campaign, all eyes will be on Son and his teammates as they strive to end the club’s long wait for silverware.
