Simone Inzaghi departs from Inter Milan to join Al-Hilal, as reported, after suffering a historic loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.
Inter Milan have confirmed that head coach Simone Inzaghi has departed the club following a record-breaking defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.
Inzaghi, who guided Inter to the Serie A title in the 2023/24 season, as well as two Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana trophies, leaves the San Siro after his side suffered a staggering 5-0 loss to PSG in Munich. This defeat marks the heaviest in the history of the Champions League final for the Italian side.
This was not the first time Inzaghi faced disappointment on the grandest European stage, as it was his second defeat in a Champions League final during his four-year tenure at Inter. The previous year, the team finished as runners-up after a narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City.
The 2024/25 season proved to be a challenging one for Inzaghi, as it was the only trophyless campaign during his time in charge. He took over the reins from Antonio Conte in 2021, who had led Inter to their first Scudetto in 11 years.
In a dramatic conclusion to the Serie A season, Conte’s Napoli edged out Inter for the title by just a single point, despite Inter securing a victory against Cesc Fabregas’ Como on the final day.
Before his tenure at Inter, Inzaghi enjoyed success with Lazio, where he won three trophies over five years, including the Coppa Italia in the 2018/19 season and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.
Now, at 49 years of age, Inzaghi is reportedly set to take over at Al Hilal, replacing Jorge Jesus, who was dismissed in May after leading the club to a second-place finish in the Saudi Pro League. Despite finishing as the league’s highest scorers with 95 goals in 34 matches, they fell eight points short of champions Al Ittihad.
Inzaghi is expected to reunite with midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, a pivotal figure in Lazio’s midfield during his previous spell. The Saudi club also boasts a number of former Premier League players, including Joao Cancelo, Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves, and Aleksandar Mitrovic.
