Sheffield United was demoted following a heavy defeat by Newcastle, Crystal Palace tied with Fulham, and Wolves emerged victorious against Luton.
Sheffield United’s hopes of avoiding relegation were dashed as they suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat to Newcastle. The Blades had already faced a setback earlier in the week with a 4-2 loss to Manchester United. However, they started the game positively, taking the lead through Anel Ahmedhodzic after just five minutes.
But Newcastle’s in-form striker Alexander Isak quickly equalized on the 26th minute, latching onto a through ball and calmly slotting it home. Isak then converted a penalty on the 61st minute, followed by a Ben Osborn own goal, which opened the floodgates for Newcastle. Callum Wilson added insult to injury by making it five on the 71st minute.
Meanwhile, Fulham and Crystal Palace battled it out in a London derby at Craven Cottage. It took until the 52nd minute for Rodrigo Muniz to give Fulham the lead with a header. However, Jeffrey Schlupp equalized for Crystal Palace in the dying minutes of the game, leaving both teams with a share of the points.
Wolves secured a victory over Luton with a 2-1 scoreline. Hwang Hee-chan opened the scoring on the 39th minute with a deflected shot from a tight angle. Toti Gomes doubled Wolves’ lead on the 50th minute, dealing a potentially fatal blow to Luton’s survival hopes. Although Carlton Morris pulled one back for Luton, it was not enough to salvage a result.
In another match, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Burnley. Antony gave United the lead on the 80th minute with a composed finish, but Zeki Amdouni equalized from the penalty spot just seven minutes later. The result added further pressure on United manager Erik ten Hag.
Earlier in the day, Liverpool’s hopes of winning the league this season took a blow as they drew 2-2 against West Ham. With Arsenal and Manchester City yet to play, it seemed like Liverpool had lost any chance of clinching the title.
Overall, it was a dramatic day in English football, with Sheffield United’s relegation confirmed, Crystal Palace and Fulham sharing the spoils, Wolves securing a vital win, and Manchester United and Liverpool dropping points in their respective matches.
