Senegal has secured their place in the next round with an impeccable performance, thanks to the exceptional goals scored by Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye. Meanwhile, Cameroon managed to secure a spot in the next stage, albeit narrowly.
Senegal’s defender #4 Abdoulaye Seck (C) celebrated with his teammates after scoring the team’s first goal in their Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2024 group C football match against Guinea. The match took place at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro on January 23.
In a dominant display, Senegal secured top spot in Group C with a 2-0 victory over Guinea. The reigning champions maintained a perfect record in the group stage, thanks to second-half goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Iliman Ndiaye at Stade de Yamoussoukro.
The first half was a bit stop-start, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. However, Senegal broke the deadlock just after the hour mark. Seck rose powerfully to head home from Krepin Diatta’s well-delivered free-kick, giving his team the lead.
Sadio Mane, who had missed an earlier opportunity to score, thought he had sealed the victory when he slotted the ball past Ibrahim Kone in the 85th minute. Unfortunately, his effort was ruled out for offside, denying him the goal.
Nevertheless, Senegal didn’t have to wait long for their second goal. In the dying moments of the game, they launched a devastating counter-attack. Mane found Ndiaye in acres of space, and the substitute calmly swept the ball into the net, securing the victory for Senegal.
With this win, Senegal finished at the top of Group C, ahead of Cameroon. Guinea, who had been in contention for second place, lost out to Cameroon following their dramatic 3-2 victory over Gambia. Senegal will now progress to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations with confidence and momentum.
